Slowing down at 55? Freedom at 60? Early retirement is a dream, and especially in our beautiful Isle of Man. But if you’re serious about it, then you definitely need a plan. And the sooner you start planning, the more likely that your dream becomes a reality.
Remember, even retiring at 60 means that you’ll have to wait seven years to receive the State Pension, and you’ll need to have accumulated a substantial pension pot by then to make early retirement even a slight possibility.
Here’s our five-step plan to help you prepare for considering early retirement.
1. Start saving and investing early
Time is your greatest asset, so the earlier you start putting money aside, the more that compound growth will work in your favour.
Don’t wait for a promotion or develop a ‘leave it till tomorrow’ mindset – build the habit now. Use a private pension and investment portfolios that align with your risk tolerance.
2. Live Within Your Means
Old-fashioned common sense, perhaps? But it’s the foundation of your plan! Early retirement doesn’t always mean making huge sacrifices, but you generally need to ensure that as your income rises, you don’t need to increase your spending in proportion!
It’s about prioritising financial security over excessive spending on stuff you don’t need. So try to avoid unnecessary debt and make saving part of your routine, not a nice-to-have afterthought.
If you have children at school, or you plan to have children, you may also need to factor in the costs of education even after they have reached 18 years of age.
3. Set a realistic budget – and stick to it
A budget isn’t intended to be a punishment – it’s a plan. Track your income and expenses against your savings goals. Is there anything you can cut back on? Redirect any savings you can make into your long-term plan.
You’ll need to build in flexibility for unexpected costs, and keep revisiting your budget as your situation changes.
4. Make savvy investment decisions
A savings account alone won’t get you to early retirement. You need your money to grow. This means putting it to work in a well-balanced investment portfolio and taking a long-term approach. If you’re not confident making these decisions on your own, seek advice tailored to your goals and appetite for risk. We’d be delighted to help here of course!
5. Boost your pension contributions
If you’re paying into an existing pension scheme, perhaps offered by your employer, look at the possibility of increasing your contributions. You can speak to the provider to get a pension statement and find out how much retirement income you’re currently on track to get.Isle of Man residents can contribute up to £50,000 per tax year to a pension (must be an Isle of Man-based pension), and pension contributions also benefit from tax relief.
